Its been roughly five months since I decided to make the leap from Mac OS to Linux. I am happy to report I have only had to go back to the Mac a couple of times to retrieve some files. Beyond that, I don't miss it at all.

Leaving Apple and Moving to Linux

After 11 years I have decided to leave the Apple ecosystem for doing development work and move to a dedicated Linux environment.

Back in 2009, I leapt from Windows to Mac after being disgusted with the availability of development tools on Windows as it pertains to open source development. I was the first to do so in the company and was an Apple devotee ever since, owning a half dozen Macbook Pros in that time.

So why change?

Docker for Mac Edge Brings Major Performance Improvements

Great news for developers who use Docker for Mac and encounter performance issues.

The newest version of Docker for Mac Edge (preview release) includes new file caching / bind mount options for directories on your machine to improve performance using Mutagen. The amazing Jeff Geerling offered some thoughts, initial metrics and a quick write up on how to get started with it.

Setting Up Traefik 2 with Local SSL Certificate

I recently updated our local Docker development stacks to use Traefik version 2. Traefik is an edge router application that makes setting up services and routes rather simple.

I found the process of enforcing HTTPS traffic a bit challenging and required a lot more effort than version 1 of Traefik. All of our projects use HTTPS only with a self signed certificate for local development, no HTTP. Hopefully sharing this information helps some folks out.

Testing Drupal with Cypress in Docker

In a previous post, I discussed how to use custom cookies on Pantheon and how to provide a browser based functional test using the WebDriverTestBase class from Drupal 8.

While it worked great, these tests can be a bit of a bear to get up and running locally. Installing Selenium and chromedriver can be daunting and unwieldy and difficult to replicate across members of the team so they can write and run tests locally. Leveraging the same stack in CI can be an equal challenge.
